My Summer Internship at KCB
Note: Meet Summer Intern Juniper Pinchera, daughter of Business Manager, Nancy Pinchera
Soon-to-be a Junior at Beaver Country Day School, I live in Boston, but I grew up in towns surrounding the city, such as Dedham, Brookline, and Newton. This is due to my schooling, summer camps, etc. My friends have always influenced me, especially with summer work, so my experience varies. For example, I have done everything from scooping ice cream to bossing around eight-year-olds at summer camp to entering invoices. This is strictly a coincidence, but I enjoy having versatile work experiences. Each of these jobs has taught me important life skills and lessons that will help me down the road.
My mom (Nancy Pinchera), the business manager at Kevin Cradock Builders, has always had the most interesting job in my mind. She started working for Kevin when she was eight months pregnant with me. I came to KCB with her every day for the first year of my life – so I was pretty much born into being a part of this company. When I was younger, I loved coming to work with her. I would watch Looney Tunes and utilize the hot cocoa in the kitchen while she was working. I spent the most overall time at the old locations of KCB and never really familiarized myself with the current Hyde Park location. Now I am learning the ins and outs of KCB as a summer intern, and let me tell you, it's more than just getting free coffee and cocoa.
At KCB I am a general office assistant, meaning I can assist anyone who needs it, but I mainly help out Staff Bookkeeper Kate Diana, Office Administrator Joyce Carvalho, and my mom. I have also recently learned the term “Gofer,” and I classify myself as one – meaning I can go-for whatever anyone needs. I can go out or in the office to pick up or complete anything someone may need that will make their job a little bit easier.
I have learned how to work on the platform QuickBooks, the online finance managing service that we use. From there I learned how to enter invoices, reconcile statements, and make sure everything is in place. This helps Kate with her job as the bookkeeper at KCB. Every day I use QuickBooks to enter invoices, bills, and checks from a folder in Dropbox that Kate has made for me. She enters them into this folder and gives me deadlines for me to complete these.
Another big project I am working on is shelves at KCB. There are huge storage shelves in the office that are screaming for a makeover. They are unorganised and dusty and I work piece by piece to buy containers ad plan out the organization of these shelves. So far I have taken inventory of some of the bins on the shelves, as well as bought new bins for certain items. I also help with a smaller bookshelf in the boiler room at the office. This one is a little less disastrous, but still needs to look aesthetic and presentable seeing as it is in a main room at the office and meant for decoration. So far I have organized the books, trophies/awards, and decore on the shelf. I have also bought plants to put on the shelf to make it look prettier.
I am still learning more about the way things are run at KCB. My main goal is to make people who are working extremely hard and taking on a lot of responsibilities jobs a little bit easier and less stressful. It can be hard to balance several things at once when you have an important job, and having an assistant is incredibly helpful. I still want to learn more about the business industry, even if I don't go into business professions, It is still extremely valuable for me to have knowledge and job experience to be able to further myself in life.
