Landmark Homes: Loring Greenough Kitchen Restoration
Back in 2017 at a cocktail party hosted at the Loring Greenough home, Kevin heard about the plan to restore the kitchen and was interested in helping. Kevin Cradock Builders offered to donate all materials, labor, and project management to support the restoration of the historic kitchen. As a Jamaica Plain native, helping to preserve JP landmarks is one of the things Kevin enjoys most about what we do.
The Loring Greenough House was constructed in 1760 by Joshua Loring, a commodore in the English Colonial naval forces. During the American Revolution, the house went on to be a bakery for Colonial forces and a military hospital during the Battle of Bunker Hill.
The house was eventually bought by Anne Doane and David Greenough and their dependents occupied the house for the next four generations until 1924. The house was then purchased by the Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club, a ladies association, saving it from demolition. Currently, the house serves as a center for community, historical, and educational activities.
The plan for the restoration of the kitchen included installing new cabinetry that remained true to the original design and returning a soapstone sink to its rightful place. Our goal was to honor the integrity of the Loring Greenough House and restore the kitchen to its former glory. The Loring Greenough home is a prime example of JP history and we loved being a part of the restoration process!
