Coffee and Cabinets: A Deep Dive into Millwork with Kristin Paton Interiors
A short time ago, we had the pleasure of hosting the talented team from Kristin Paton Interiors for our first-ever Coffee & Cabinets session. This new educational series, hosted by Kevin Cradock Woodworking is designed to help industry professionals deepen their understanding of woodworking practices and quality standards. With coffee in hand and plenty of conversation flowing, we explored the intricacies of fine cabinetry and woodworking by sharing insights that help bridge the gap between design vision and craftsmanship.
During the session, Kevin and Michael covered a range of essential millwork topics, including:
Cabinetry Construction – A deep dive into the assembly process of custom cabinetry. We broke down the various components and reviewed how technical decisions affect final aesthetics and functionality.
Inset vs. Overlay Cabinetry – We explored how inset doors create a seamless, furniture-like aesthetic, while overlay doors provide a more contemporary look.
Door Styles & Face Frame Profiles – The small details make a big impact in millwork. We reviewed popular sticking styles and how they influence both the design and feel of a finished piece.
Material Selection & Wood Grain – Choosing the right materials is crucial for both longevity and visual appeal. We showcased a variety of hardwoods, softwoods, and veneer options, explaining their unique characteristics. Understanding grain patterns, stability, and finishing techniques allows designers to make informed choices that align with their project goals.
The discussion was not only informative but also interactive, with the Kristin Paton Interiors team bringing great questions and perspectives on how millwork plays into their design process. By breaking down technical details and offering real-world applications, we were able to highlight how thoughtful millwork choices elevate luxury interiors.
The success of this session confirmed something we’ve long believed—great design and great craftsmanship go hand in hand. That’s why we’re excited to continue hosting Cabinets & Coffee sessions, inviting more design teams to collaborate, learn, and refine their millwork knowledge.
Stay tuned for more updates on upcoming events—because the best conversations happen over coffee!
